Exploring Utsunomiya: Futaarayama Shrine in Utsunomiya! - 宇都宮二荒山神社

Utsunomiya is home to many shrines, but probably the most famous shrine is the Futaarayama Shrine in the center of town. It is one of two famous shrines in the Shimotsukekuni area of Tochigi, the other being the Futaarasan Shrine in Nikko. They share the same name in Chinese characters, so their names use different readings to tell them apart.

The shrine in Utsunomiya is not hard to miss, as it is very large and in the center of town. One must climb a high set of stairs to reach the shrine. Many people go to pray every day and this time there were even some celebrating Shichigosan (a celebration for children who are 3, 5, or 7 years old) as well. Below is the video I took of the shrine. Hopefully, I will explore its sister shrine in Nikko soon. Enjoy!
